The TMG Due Diligence Interview Series Kicks Off 2023 with Jason Sewer, CEO at Drone Strategic Partners LLC.
JFM: Jason, your career has consisted of working for large organizations but also with an entrepreneurial spirit. Share a little bit about what your firm provides, for whom, and where in the transactional and development cycle do you become involved?
JS: Working in the insurance for over 20 years has given me great insight into the inner workings of large corporations. There are also some very successful ways of doing business that have stood the test of time. We utilize the best parts of those service standards when offering our drone services to individuals, small businesses or large firms. We then blend those corporate standards with the idealism and hustle of the entrepreneurial environment. We offer services in the real estate, insurance, construction, and roofing industries, amongst many others, and we can help just about any business add to their bottom line. I am involved in all aspects of the development cycle, even when tasks are delegated.
JFM: Are you still in the phase of needing to educate the marketplace in terms of “what drones can do for you”? Or is it becoming more common?
JS: Although drone services have become more commonplace, most of what I do in the marketplace is educating businesses on how drone services increase profitability, are safer and a green alternative to machines that are powered by gas. That being said, the last 5 years have given us a lot of practice in how we communicate with our potential clients!
JFM: I’m sure the Commercial Real Estate Community would be surprised in the number of ways drones can deliver value. Do you have a couple of examples?
JS: There are a plethora of ways that drones (and the accessories that pair nicely with drone technology) are already helping the real estate community. Here are 3 examples:
- 3D interior and exterior mapping of residential or commercial buildings (often with floor plans), paired with drone footage. This pairing is perfect for real estate listings. The 3D sketches allow for potential buyers or renters to view the building virtually with great detail and without having to visit the location in person. The sketches and floor plans are very accurate, allowing for repairs to be planned, materials ordered, etc. Meanwhile, drone footage gives the ultimate aerial perspective to see how much yard a home may have, how the home or commercial building fits in proximity to its surrounding lots and roads, and if there are any potential hazards.
- Roof inspections. Drones provide very good aerial roof inspections by utilizing high-resolution cameras, thermal cameras, and videos to scan commercial or residential roofing membranes and determine if there are any abnormalities or areas of concern that the owner should address. These inspections are faster, safer and cheaper than performing these inspections manually.
- Land surveying. Simply put, drones can assess larger areas of real estate faster, which saves money and develops this information faster than traditional methods.
JFM: Lastly, how’s business? Anything new on the horizon? How do you see 2023 shaping up?
JS: Business is great! Thanks for asking! Pardon the pun, but things are really taking off for our company. We have secured partnerships with major companies in the real estate and insurance industries, and we have figured out ways to help businesses operate more efficiently and profitable with drone technology. I believe that 2023 is the year that drone technology and servicers begin to reach the masses.
